So today, we decided to deliver some sweet new content. As part of the concept of our blog was to also help expose some “starving artists” and super talented people, recently, we decided to do a quick and fun interview with our good friend and 2012 winner of the Nokia Asha Street Artist competition, Lesego Mathaba. Not too long, not too short, just 5 quick questions with the young up-and-coming and extremely talented artist.
1. Why do you do what you do?
I do what I do because I have been doing it almost all my life. I have always loved drawing. It was an obvious choice to continue what I have always loved doing, to produce communicating artwork.
2. What role does the artist have in society?
Artist have a an important role in society. They can influence the society with their craft to bring change. Take for instance Banksy, and his piece he did on the Gaza wall. Much of the art he produced on the wall visually subverts and draws attention to its nature as a barrier by incorporating images of escape. What artist do most times is to create awareness and also be the voice of the voice of the people.
3. What work do you most enjoying doing?
I guess I love what I do in general. I enjoy coming up with a concept then looking for reference and executing the work. I think I enjoy the process of making an idea come alive.
4. What superpower would you have and why?
The super power I would like to have is the one of X-man character Mystic. The ability to change to anything, in the creative industry its an advantage to be versatile, you stay competitive.
5. Who would you give the middle finger too?
As for the middle finger, I would give to Bafana Bafana for being over paid, but don’t deliver any results.
Thats our piece and tell them you heard it from Matt “The Rat” Mkhize and @Mr_MediaX!
